FACTS
There are many varieties of oak, but we‘ve used white oak here. Other varieties display similar properties. One of the most famous oak trees, The Major Oak, is located in Sherwood Forest and is believed to have been a hideout for Robin Hood and his outlaws. Oak trees can live for more than 1000 years.

SUSTAINABILITY
Very good (when sourced appropriately). Oak is not listed in the CITES Appendices and is reported by the IUCN as being a species of least concern.

COLOUR
Mid to light beige, but yellows significantly with oil. Oak will produce black stains when interacting with any ferrous fixings.

GRAIN
Straight, open grain, often displaying medullary rays which contribute to its incredible strength.

HABITAT AND ECOLOGY
Forest and grassland. A mature oak tree creates a habitat for many animals, more than 180 different kinds of birds and mammals use acorns as a food source.

WOOD
Dense, heavy, and hard. Oak is a tough, strong, and durable wood, but must be seasoned properly to avoid warping.
